CAPE TOWN – Sony is reportedly going to cut around 2,000 staff members in its smartphone department by 2020.
This is according to a report by Nikkei Asian Review, which states that the reason for the retrenchments are that the company's 2018 fiscal year is expected to show just 6.5 million smartphone sales, which is half its 2017 figures.
The report further states that Sony's smartphone department is expected to post an operating loss for the third year in a row in 2019.
In 2014, the company retrenched 1,000 staff members in the same department due to a drop in sales figures.
Sony is yet to confirm these statements.
