MTN and Nike voted most admired brands in Africa
US sportswear and apparel brand Nike and South African telecom MTN have been voted the most admired brands in Africa, according to the 2020 edition of the Brand Africa 100: Africa’s Best Brands survey.
MTN is also the only African brand in the rankings of the ‘Most Admired Brands in Africa’, while Nike is the international brand that has topped the rankings for the third consecutive year, due to partnerships with record-breaking African athletes, including Caster Semenya.
In a survey carried out in 27 countries, representing around 80% of the population and the GDP of Africa, MTN is now also considered one of the continent’s most admired media brands.
MTN Mobile Money – through which MTN provides more than 35 million Africans access to financial services – remains one of Africa’s most admired finance brands. The group also maintained its top position in the telecoms provider category
Additionally, The survey found that non-African brands accounted for 87?percent of the Top 100 brands in Africa, as Africans mostly preferred non-African brands for luxury items and African brands for essentials.
Nike sponsored the T-shirts of the South African and Nigerian football teams, making it the go-to brand for fitness and lifestyle in sub-Saharan Africa. Its collaborations with South African-based designer Poppy Karabo and Nigerian singer Wizkid on his Starboy brand also boosted the brand.
