#LockdownUpdate: Egg challenge gone wrong, retailers now want participants to donate wasted goods
Cyril Ramaphosa announced an extended lockdown period of 2 weeks for citizens of South Africa which has led to people having to find newer ways to keep busy each day such as finding a new a hobby, online courses, cooking etc.
This has led to a new social media challenge doing its rounds during lockdown called, "The Egg Challenge" which entails that a person swallows a raw egg, followed by a mouthful of sugar and then ending it off with a shot of brandy or rum.
The person then goes on to challenge or nominate a friend or a few people to do the same.
The challenge has not been accepted by most of society, with many claiming that participants should not be wasting resources because there are many people who are struggling to get access to food.
Retailers such as the Pick n Pay located in George and VC Spar located in Brakpan Gauteng are now calling on participants of the challenge or those thinking of participating to rather donate these goods such as eggs or sugar to those in need.
Pick n Pay George said on a Facebook post: "For Everyone who participated in the Egg Challenge, We challenge you to donate 6 eggs, 1 kg sugar & 1 cold drink/ UHT Milk to child welfare/old age home & pensioners. Thank you."
VC Spar said in a Facebook post: "VC Superspar challenges you. Donations bin available in-store! Bank details can be provided for those who prefer cash donations."
