Hands-on with the iPhone 16 Series at iStore Canal Walk: First Impressions and local pricing

The iStore at Canal Walk was buzzing with energy on the launch day of Apple’s iPhone 16 series. It wasn’t just about getting a glimpse of the latest tech—many visitors were there to upgrade their current devices, taking advantage of trade-in deals and contract options.

You could feel the excitement in the air as people gathered around the demo tables, eager to test out Apple’s newest innovations.

First Look at the iPhone 16 Series

Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup stays familiar with four models: the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Each model brings subtle but important upgrades. The big talking point? Apple’s new AI suite, Apple Intelligence.

This new feature is integrated throughout iOS, offering everything from shorthand note-taking to creating custom emojis with text prompts. If you're into smart assistants, Apple claims of a more helpful Siri might just sway you—Siri can now recognise what’s on your screen and respond to commands like, "Play that song."

The iPhone 16 Pro models have the A18 Pro chip, which is designed to handle AI processes up to 15% faster than the previous generation.

This chip also ensures that you’ll get smoother performance whether you're gaming or using AI features.

New Features and Design Tweaks

The physical design of the iPhone 16 series feels familiar but refined. The Pro models have seen the biggest change with larger screens—6.3 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and a massive 6.9 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. These larger displays are perfect for streaming or gaming, and the ProMotion technology keeps the visuals smooth.

If you're a fan of customisation, Apple brought the Action button—previously available only on the Pro models—down to the base models.

This button lets you set up quick actions like launching apps or turning on the flashlight. Meanwhile, Apple added a new Camera Control button across all models, which allows for touch gestures to adjust zoom, focus, and other camera settings on the fly.

Camera Upgrades You’ll Notice

As with every iPhone, the camera is a key focus. The base models retain the 48MP main and 12MP ultrawide cameras, now with autofocus on the ultrawide lens. This means better close-ups and improved low-light shots. The ultrawide lens also captures more light, improving photo quality in tricky conditions.

The Pro models, meanwhile, have gotten a huge upgrade with a 5x optical zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro, matching the Pro Max for the first time.

For the video creators out there, Apple has pushed things further with 4K slow-motion recording at 120 frames per second. The second-generation sensor on the Pro models eliminates shutter lag, making it easier to capture moving subjects, whether it's pets, kids, or flowing fabrics.

Prices for the iPhone 16 in South Africa

The big question on everyone’s mind is, how much will the iPhone 16 cost in South Africa? Here's a breakdown of prepaid prices for the lineup:

  • iPhone 16 128GB: R20,999
  • iPhone 16 Plus 128GB: R23,999
  • iPhone 16 Pro 128GB: R26,499
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB: R31,799
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB: R42,499

If you're looking for more storage, you'll be paying a premium, especially for the higher-end Pro models. For those who prefer to pay cash, the iStore is offering trade-in deals on older models like the iPhone 13 and 14, which could make upgrading more affordable.

Luckily, if prepaid prices are a bit steep, contract options from MTN, Vodacom, and Telkom make it easier to get your hands on the latest model. Whether you go for a contract or prepaid option, you’ll find that Apple’s new lineup is priced to reflect its high-end status.

Should You Upgrade?

For anyone still using an iPhone 12 or older, the iPhone 16 series will feel like a significant upgrade—especially with its improved cameras, faster AI processing, and better low-light performance. But if you’re already using an iPhone 15, the differences might be less obvious, unless you’re keen on experiencing Apple Intelligence or taking advantage of the new camera features.

As always with Apple, it’s not just about the specs but the overall experience. After testing the iPhone 16 at the iStore, it’s clear that the new models continue to push the envelope, blending AI with powerful hardware for a more seamless user experience.

A special thanks to Shelley Cerff, the iStore trainer, whose knowledge and enthusiasm made the hands-on demo an unforgettable experience. Shelley expertly guided us through the device’s features, showing just how much Apple’s latest lineup has to offer.

So, if you’re looking for the best iPhone to date, the iPhone 16 series certainly lives up to that title—at least until Apple’s next big thing.
