Over the past week, multiple brands including Shoprite and Checkers have had their tinned pilchards fish in tomato sauce recalled due to a canning deficiency that could make the product unfit for consumption.
This is according to a statement by West Point Processors, which stated that the affected brands are:
- Deep Catch
- Mammas
- Prime Ocean
- Spar
- Sunny
- Shoprite Ritebrand
- Cape Point
- Checkers Housebrand
- U Brand
- Saldanha
- West Point
- OK Housebrand
The 400g Pilchards in Tomato Sauce cans have the specific batch codes starting with ZST-2, ZSC-2, ZST29, or ZSC 29 must be returned immediately to the stores.
The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications noted that It’s not just West Point Processors’ tinned pilchards in tomato sauce that have been recalled, but their pilchards in chilli sauce as well.
