Spur to introduce drive-thru and other takeaway options to its franchises

Spur Corporation announced that it will be introducing multiple forms of drive-thru formats for its franchises such as Spur, RocoMamas chain and a click-and-collect option for the Bento franchise.

This is because Spur Corporation saw a drop in revenue of 40.2% to R314.2m for the six months ended December 2020 due to the hard lockdown that was introduced in March 2020.

Improved trading conditions were experienced from September 2020 through to November 2020 as the relaxation of the national curfew extended trading hours and alcohol sales were permitted.

However, Spur said restaurant turnover fell 25.8 percent in December as the second wave of Covid-19 infections led to the imposition of more trade restrictions.

According to the group, the Spur brand more than doubled sales via Mr D Food, and including its other brands such as John Dory’s and Panarottis, sales via Mr D Food were up 72% compared to the last half of 2019. Sales via Uber Eats were also up 41%, the company said.

Spur CEO Val Nichas stated that the group is positive that things will get better with time as Spur plans to open eight to ten new restaurants in South Africa in the second half of the financial year.

International expansion will focus mainly on the rest of Africa, with four to six new sites planned.

The company aims to use these methods of focusing on "takeaways" to help ensure growth and will be expanding on this trading format going forward.
