Netflix introduces high quality audio to its streaming platform
CAPE TOWN - Netflix announced that it has launched “ a higher studio quality” audio feature to its streaming platform, offering users improved audio quality surround sound and Dolby Atmos.
Netflix said in a statement: "Today we’re excited to announce a new feature, high-quality audio, which takes our sound quality to another level. We gave it this straightforward name because it fits: high-quality audio delivers audio that sounds closer to what creators hear in the studio, so every little detail is captured for a richer, more intense experience.¨
¨Additionally, if you have the bandwidth or device limitations, we’ve made the feature adaptive so that we will deliver the best possible audio to match your capabilities. This is similar to what we already do for video.¨
The platform has increased its audio bitrate to 640kbps for viewers with 5.1 surround sound system, and also offers a bitrate of up to 768kbps for Dolby Atmos viewers.
The Dolby Atmos will only be available to Premium subscribers, but the 640kbps bitrate is available for all Netflix subscribers.
Netflix added that it expects these bitrates to evolve over time as it becomes more efficient with its encoding techniques.
“After years perfecting our adaptive video switching, we’re thrilled that a similar approach can enable studio quality sound to make it to members’ households, ensuring that every detail of the mix is preserved,” Netflix said.
