MTN to launch budget Android phone for R300
MTN at its interim results presentation announced that it will launch another budget Android smartphone across its African markets in the second half of 2019.
MTN Group Chief executive Rob Shuter said the device would be priced at $20 (R300) and would run the Android Go operating system.
The Smart S has a traditional keypad and feature phone design but supports modern mobile apps including WhatsApp, Google Maps, Facebook, and Google Assistant.
MTN’s upcoming R300 smartphone will run Android Go, a lightweight version of the Android operating system which is designed specifically for cheaper devices and includes support for Google Play Services and official Android apps.
Last year, MTN in partnership with China Mobile, chipset maker UNISCO and KaiOS technology launched its first smart feature 3G device.
The announcement was made at a press conference during AfricaCom, one of Africa's largest technology conferences in Cape Town.
The aim of the device is to allow users access to the internet without paying a large cost of money for a phone.
