Huawei in trouble after Android licence suspended
CAPE TOWN – Google announced it has suspended Huawei’s Android licence after the Trump administration released a blacklist that stated the Chinese tech giant and 67 of its affiliates and subsidiaries are banned from trading with US firms.
This was first reported by Reuters, which stated that the company will immediately lose access to updates to Google’s Android operating system.
A second report by Bloomberg stated that chipmakers such as Intel Corp, Qualcomm Inc have told their employees they will not supply critical software and components to Huawei until further notice.
Google released a statement which stated that it is only revoked the licence so it could compliance with US government policy.
“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications,” the company said.
“For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices.”
If you are a current Huawei smartphone holder, according to Google, your device will be able to continue to use and download app updates provided by Google.
However, any new devices made by the smartphone company will also lose access to services, such as the Google Play Store, Gmail and YouTube apps.
Huawei is yet to release any comment on the matter.
