Coronavirus Lockdown: See which stores will still be open at these major malls
President Cyril Ramaposa announced that South Africa will go into a national lockdown on Friday, 27 March (immediately after midnight on Thursday), to slow the spread of the coronavirus and it will last for 21 days.
During that time, all businesses must shut down, other than a list of those considered essential services.
Between Tuesday 24th of March and Thursday the 26th of March, businesses will be able to operate as usual, although under a call for social distancing.
In his address, Ramaphosa said that businesses that may continue operating will include:
- Pharmacies,
- laboratories,
- banks,
- essential finance systems, such as the JSE,
- supermarkets,
- petrol stations,
- healthcare providers and
- companies involved in making or distributing food, basic goods, and medical supplies.
Here are what these major malls had to say:
1. Canal Walk
Canal Walk stated that it would be temporarily partially closed, effective from Friday, 27 March 2020.
Only essential-goods stores, including banks, supermarkets and pharmacies, will be permitted to trade as per their revised trading hours, 9 am - 6 pm.
"Access into the centre and parking areas will be limited to Entrance 1 and 4 remaining open. All parking will be free. Entrance 12 will remain open for pedestrian access. There will be signage to direct you to the nearest open entrance," said Canal Walk in a statement.
2. Cavendish
The following essential stores at Cavendish Square will remain open during the 21 days:
- Woolworths | Mon-Sat 9-6 pm; Sun 9-5 pm
- Pick n Pay | Mon-Sat 8-6pm ; Sun 8-5pm
- Clicks | Mon-Sat 9-6pm ; Sun: 9-5pm
- Nu Pharmacy | Mon-Sat 8:30-7pm ; Sun 10-5pm
- Absolute Pets | Mon-Sat 9-6 pm; Sun 10-5 pm
- Nedbank | TBC
- Capitec | Mon-Sat 9-4 pm; Sundays closed
- Bidvest Bank | Mon-Sat 9-4 pm; Sundays closed
- Wellness Warehouse | TBC
Parking will be free to ensure that you will not need to touch any parking machines.
3. Mall of Africa
Stores will be trading from 27 March – 16 April 2020 at Mall of Africa.
Parking will be available at entrances D, E and G to access the Essential Stores. Free parking with contactless access.
African Bank, First National bank, Nedbank, Standard Bank, Absa and Capitec.
4. Sandton City
Sandton City noted that only essential stores will be trading during the lockdown from 27 March - 16 April at Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square.
It urged customers to use the entrance on 5th Street, Alice Lane and Sandton Drive to access the essential stores. To access the Butcher Shop and Grill Butchery please use Deodar Road Entrance.
