Capitec unveils new virtual banking card

Capitec announced that it has launched a new digital virtual card, which can be found on its banking app that can be used by clients to shop online or make digital payments.

“While other banks have made noise about their virtual cards, which are still to launch in the future, Capitec has quietly gone live with their virtual card, one of their many easy solutions for the modern consumer,” Capitec said in a statement.

The bank added that the benefit of having a digital card is that users don’t have to worry about it getting lost, stolen, or cloned.

“Online shopping and digital payments are growing exponentially every year. While savvy online shoppers will quickly take to the flexibility and ease of virtual bank cards, these cards can especially benefit all those who have been wary of online transactions in the past. For them, it can open up a new world of convenience, without having to worry about card fraud,” said Francois Viviers, Executive of Marketing and Communications at Capitec in a statement.

The card is available to all clients, who just need to activate it on the banking app. Users can save it as a payment card for online subscriptions or payments (such as Netflix). You can also add it to scan-to-pay apps like SnapScan or Zapper.

Here's how to make a virtual banking card on the Capitec app:

1. Log in to the app and select the “Cards” tab in the bottom bar.

2. Select “Virtual Card” in the top-right corner and tap the “Add Virtual Card” button.

3. After selecting the Virtual Card option, follow the sign-up steps to complete the process.

Once the card is generated, users will be able to tap the virtual card to see its card number, expiry date, and CVV code. Users will also be able to set the card limits on the app.

Since the digital card is not linked to the physical card, users can cancel it without worrying about being unable to use their main card and if users cancel or lose their physical card, they can still use the virtual one.
