NCC Investigates Clover Over Peanut Butter Recall: Consumer Safety Concerns Rise

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) is delving into alleged breaches of the Consumer Protection Act by Clover, a prominent food manufacturer, after a concerning recall of its Go Nuts Peanut Butter 400g. The recall, affecting 10,776 units, was initiated following tests indicating elevated levels of aflatoxin, a potentially harmful substance, according to an in-depth report by Independent Media (IOL).

As reported by IOL, the impacted product with best-before dates of July 12, 18, and 19, 2025, was distributed to approximately 993 retailers. Consumers who have purchased this peanut butter have been advised to cease consumption immediately and return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

This recall adds to a series of recent peanut butter product recalls, signalling a broader issue within the industry. Previous recalls include Pick n Pay’s 1kg No Name, Dischem’s Lifestyle Brand 400g and 800g variants, Wazoogles in various sizes, Eat Naked in various sizes, and Woolworths’s Peanut Butter Dairy Ice Cream, all due to aflatoxin levels surpassing safety thresholds.

In response to these developments, the NCC is urging all producers, manufacturers, and suppliers of peanut butter-related products to conduct immediate aflatoxin tests and submit their findings.

Acting commissioner Thezi Mabuza emphasized the importance of swift action, stating, "Suppliers must immediately recall non-compliant brands to safeguard South African consumers from harm."

Mabuza highlighted the health risks associated with aflatoxin consumption, which include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Affected consumers are urged to return recalled products promptly, with or without proof of purchase, to mitigate potential health hazards.

Consumers are advised to stay vigilant and heed recall notices issued by regulatory authorities to safeguard their health and well-being.
