How to be prepared for loadshedding this weekend with Game

This year, South Africans have been dealing with the challenges of load-shedding for 15 years -with many having several hacks under their belts for dealing with the blackouts.

African retail giant, Game, is now offering special deals on essential household and pantry items in its More-For-Less promotion – valid until 31 March – aimed at assisting South Africans to stock up on the necessities in order to be better equipped to deal with load-shedding.

“At the beginning of the year, we see our customer base looking to stock up on essential pantry and hygiene items,” explains Katherine Madley, Vice President of Marketing at Game.

“Having assisted our consumers through the challenges of load-shedding for the last 15 years, this year we have included essential household items like batteries, solar lights, cooler boxes, headlamps and braai items into the More-For-Less promotion to ensure our customers are able to shop these blackout essentials at unbeatable prices.”

Game’s top tips for dealing with load-shedding in 2021, are:

Pantry bulk buying

Buying essential pantry items in bulk will save you money and ensure you are prepared when load-shedding hits and you are unable to cook on your stove top. Canned goods like corn, chickpeas, peas, beans, pilchards and tuna, for example, can be pulled together to make a variety of salads or meals that the family can enjoy.

Invest in gas cooker

Investing in a gas cooker will ensure you are able to enjoy a hot meal and even a cup of tea or coffee in the morning.

Have a braai

The South African favourite is a great solution to combatting the load-shedding blues. Stock up on firelighters and charcoal, and you will always be prepared.

Invest in a deep freezer

A deep freezer is a great investment for ensuring your frozen items remain frozen, even when the lights go out for an extended period. It will also ensure you’re able to stock up on frozen items for easy defrosting and preparing during load-shedding.

Freeze bottles of water

For those without a deep freezer, filling 2-litre bottles with water and freezing them will ensure you are able to use this ice for keeping frozen or fridge items cool.

Torches and headlamps

Invest in torches, headlamps and battery-operated lights – and ensure you stock up on batteries, to ensure you are always prepared.

Solar lights and geyser

Many South Africans have been investing in solar lights and geysers as a way to combat the effects of load-shedding. This is a great, eco-friendly option.
